The … editors of The American Heritage® College Dictionary have compiled a list of 100 words they recommend each high school graduate should know.

Niet dat er meteen enorm moeilijke woorden in zitten, maar waarom precies die? Ziggurat, xenofoob, vortex, quasar, photosynthese, ironie, incognito, huh?
Omdat het woorden zijn die noch algemeen bekend zijn en door iedereen gebruikt worden noch te specialistisch zijn?
Een ziggurat is niet iets wast je in het dagelijks leven tegenkomt, maar wel iets dat je zou moeten kennen als je enigzins belangstelling hebt voor de wereld om je heen.
Mja. Ik heb gewoon vragen bij ‘t lijstje. Ik zie wel waar ze naartoe willen gaan hoor: een mengeling van politiek (filibuster, gerrymander), wetenschap (chromosome, hemoglobin), geschiedenis (suffragist, ziggurat), etc.
Maar waarom zowel chromosome als gamete? Mitosis als photosynthesis? Facetious als feckless? Iemand die het eerste kent zal toch bijna zeker het tweede kennen?
Enfin, ik maak er mij niet druk over, ik had alleen vragen.
