The Netanyahu Disaster – The Atlantic
I still don’t understand Netanyahu’s thinking. It is immaterial whether an Israeli prime minister finds an American president agreeable or not. A sitting president cannot be written off by a small, dependent ally, without terrible consequences.

Not a Very P.C. Thing to Say — NYMag
Stanford recently canceled a performance of Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson after protests by Native American students. UCLA students staged a sit-in to protest microaggressions such as when a professor corrected a student’s decision to spell the word indigenous with an uppercase I — one example of many “perceived grammatical choices that in actuality reflect ideologies.” A theater group at Mount Holyoke College recently announced it would no longer put on The Vagina Monologues in part because the material excludes women without vaginas. These sorts of episodes now hardly even qualify as exceptional.

“There and Back Again”
No elf/dwarf love triangle – No necromancer adventures – Kili sacrifices himself for Bilbo at the end instead of Evangeline Lilly (who’s not in this film at all) – No orcs (until necessary in the Battle of Five Armies) – Laketown is about 10 minutes – Bard does not use his son as a bow – and the full story in all less than the length of “Return of the King.” After about 312 new edits and cuts and almost 5 hours removed from the trilogy, this single film combines the three Peter Jackson movies into one immense epic that accurately tells the story of Bilbo, while maintaining what new ideas and battles have been implanted in Jackson’s retelling (such as the Battle of the Five Armies containing orcs instead of goblins).

My Lovely Wife in the Psych Ward – Pacific Standard
We met at 18. We wed at 24. At 27, I checked my wife into a psych ward—for the first time. How mental illness reshapes a marriage.
