Ik wou dit boek lezen omdat mij beloofd werd dat er naar de vroegste geschiedenis van Rome ging gekeken worden. Dat zat er in, maar ik had het exhaustiever verwacht.
Niet dat het een reslistische verwachting is: zo ongeveer duizend jaar geschiedenis, van Romulus en Remus tot het jaar 212, toen Caracalla decreteerde dat alle vrije inwoners van het Romeinse Rijk ook effectief Romeinse burgers waren (civis Romanus sum, en al die dingen), dat is op zeshonderd bladzijden niet in zeer veel detail gedaan worden.
Op bepaalde momenten leest het als een soort greatest hits van belangrijke personages — Hannibal, Spartacus, Caesar, Cleopatra, Augustus, Nero, Caligula, the usual suspects — maar als er dingen kunnen gezegd worden over gewone mensen, dan krijgen we die ook te horen.
In some ways, to explore ancient Rome from the 21st century is rather like walking on a tightrope, a very careful balancing act. If you look down on one side, everything seems reassuringly familiar: there are conversations going on that we almost join, about the nature of freedom or the problems of sex; there are buildings and monuments we recognize and family life lived out in ways we understand, with all their troublesome adolescents; and there are jokes that we ‘get.’
On the other side, it seems completely alien territory. That means not just the slavery, the filth (there was hardly any such thing as refuse collection in ancient Rome), the human slaughter in the arena and the death from illnesses whose cure we now take for granted; but also the newborn babies thrown away on rubbish heaps, the child brides and the flamboyant eunuch priests.

Het boek was veel sneller uit dan ik had gedacht, en gehoopt. Ik vrees dat ik veel te hard verwend ben door The History of Rome en door het werkelijk uitstekende The History of Byzantium. Vooral in die laatste podcast doet Robin Pierson ongelooflijk goed werk, beter dan bijna om het even welk geschiedenisboek dat ik ooit gelezen heb.

Als je het exhaustief wil, in duizenden en duizenden excellente pagina’s, dan lees je toch de Masters of Rome van Colleen McCullough?
Wel: nee, niet echt. Ik weet dat het allemaal zeer goed is van research, maar ik lees liever echte geschiedenis en geromantiseer wat meer apart van elkaar. En vooral: ik vind die periode wel interessant, maar veruit niet de interessantste. De crisis van de derde eeuw, het prille begin, de jaren 800-1000, daar lees ik allemaal liever over.
