The Trouble with Dijsselbloem | Jacobin
For Dijsselbloem, extinguishing Syriza’s promise is imperative. It is a precondition for restoring the stability of the EU that he, his party, and economic elites so desire. But it is as necessary for the continuation of the dreamless, managerial, suit-and-tie progressivism from which he has never strayed.

The dangers of the “Google Analytics-powered Startup”
Let me start off by saying that I am not advocating for people not to use Google Analytics; in fact I use it avidly and consider myself a big fan. With this post, my mission is rather to provide a bit of perspective for the many current and prospective startup founders out there who base (or intend to base) their ‘data-driven work style’ on Google Analytics alone. In my world, Google Analytics should be seen as one advisor of many rather than ‘the one truth’, and here’s a few reasons for that:

Greece Should Not Give In to Germany’s Bullying | Foreign Policy
Had the Varoufakis plan been put forward by an investment banker, it would have been perceived as perfectly reasonable. Yet in the parallel universe inhabited by Germany’s Finance Minister Wolfgang Schäuble, such demands are seen as “irresponsible”: Greece must be bled dry to service its foreign creditors in the name of European solidarity.

Yanis Varoufakis: How I became an erratic Marxist | News | The Guardian
A Greek or a Portuguese or an Italian exit from the eurozone would soon lead to a fragmentation of European capitalism, yielding a seriously recessionary surplus region east of the Rhine and north of the Alps, while the rest of Europe is would be in the grip of vicious stagflation. Who do you think would benefit from this development? A progressive left, that will rise Phoenix-like from the ashes of Europe’s public institutions? Or the Golden Dawn Nazis, the assorted neofascists, the xenophobes and the spivs? I have absolutely no doubt as to which of the two will do best from a disintegration of the eurozone.

Twitter’s Future Can Be Seen in China — Irvingside
It will be interesting to see how Twitter creates its unique ecommerce platform, but for now we can turn to China's messaging giant WeChat to predict the San Francisco-based company's future. WeChat began as a messaging service like many of its rivals Line and WhatsApp, but has recently embraced financial transactions. WeChat's users can make payments to McDonald's through the app. After the transaction is finished, WeChat provides a QR code from McDonald's for users to redeem. Last November, WeChat partnered with Chinese smartphone maker Xiaomi to sell the company's flagship phone, the Mi-3. In less than 10 minutes, 150,000 units of the device were sold on WeChat. Although WeChat's impressive user base of 500 million and counting far surpasses that of Twitter, one can still expect Twitter to experience similar results from ecommerce.

A Great Old-Timey Game-Programming Hack – Tom Moertel’s Blog
This was in the 8-bit PC era, so the gaming hardware was almost impossibly slow by today’s standards. It might not surprise you, then, to learn that, back then, game programmers did all sorts of crazy things to make their games run at playable speeds. Crazy, crazy things. This is a story about one of those things.

Google Adds to Its Menagerie of Robots – NYTimes.com
Google confirmed on Friday that it had completed the acquisition of Boston Dynamics, an engineering company that has designed mobile research robots for the Pentagon. The company, based in Waltham, Mass., has gained an international reputation for machines that walk with an uncanny sense of balance and even — cheetahlike — run faster than the fastest humans.

A million first steps – Digital scholarship blog
We have released over a million images onto Flickr Commons for anyone to use, remix and repurpose. These images were taken from the pages of 17th, 18th and 19th century books digitised by Microsoft who then generously gifted the scanned images to us, allowing us to release them back into the Public Domain. The images themselves cover a startling mix of subjects: There are maps, geological diagrams, beautiful illustrations, comical satire, illuminated and decorative letters, colourful illustrations, landscapes, wall-paintings and so much more that even we are not aware of.

Chrome font rendering ghraa

donderdag 27 september 2012 in Boeken, Computers en dingen. Permanente link | 2 reacties

Amazonlicht sm

Mét balken is de tekst donker, zónder balken is de tekst licht. Waarom?

Zonder balken is zuiver greyscale anti-aliasing:

Amazongreyscale

…en met balken is het subpixel rendering:

Amazoncleartype

Fucking fuck fuck fuckety fuck. Hop to it, Google.

Update: Oh check it out shit hit the fan.

Permanente link | 6 reacties

GMail, hetzelfde: “You have been signed out of this account. This may have happened automatically because another user signed in from the same browser. To continue using this account, you will need to sign in again. This is done to protect your account and to ensure the privacy of your information.”

woensdag 29 februari 2012 in Sonstiges. Permanente link | Eén reactie

Geniaal in al zijn eenvoud:

Why Google+ Doesn’t Care If You Never Come Back

Ad targeting. Google+ is designed to power ad targeting, and for that it only needs you to sign up once. This lets it combine the biographical information you initially enter such as age, gender, education, employers, and places you’ve lived with your activity on Search, Gmail, Maps and all its other products to create an accurate identity profile. And this powers targeting of more relevant ads it can charge more for.

So despite comScore showing that the average Google+ user only spends 3 minutes per month on Google+, VP Bradley Horowitz wasn’t lying when he told the Wall Street Journal ”We’re growing by every metric we care about”. [via]

‘t Is andermaal nog eens helemaal duidelijk: When you don’t pay for something, you are the product being sold.

Mountain Lion Review: What Happened to Apple’s Innovation?
That's the most surprising thing about Mountain Lion. Not what Apple did, but that it makes clear a startling reality: Microsoft is the new Apple, thinking of ways to make a better, more productive experience for users. Sure, MS might fail, but at least Redmond is breaking new ground and trying to push computing forward.

Think about that for a second: Mountain Lion is conservative and boring—even gaudy at times. Meanwhile Microsoft is pushing the envelope and being innovative and elegant in its approach to user interface.

Hell. It froze.
