Chrome, vroeger, dat was een web browser die snel ging, die geen tierlantijnen deed, die rechttoe-rechtaan deed wat nodig was.

Als er ergens iets gemaakt moest worden: eerst in Chrome doen, dat is een plezier om mee te werken, en dan eens diep zuchten en het proberen in orde krijgen in Firefox en IE.

Dat is al een tijd niet meer het geval: Chrome is een log monster dat geheugen vreet, denkt dat het slimmer is dan u, onstabiel is en om onverklaarbare redenen vertraagt of stilvalt.

En wat veel erger is: dat meer dan regelmatig plots niet meer doet wat het gisteren nog deed. Dan zijt ge iets aan het maken, en oh kijk nu background-images worden niet meer ingeladen. Of toch wel. Of toch niet. Of toch wel. Of toch niet. Horizontale scrollbalken? Wie heeft dat nu nodig — wég ermee. Of nee, toch niet. Of wacht, toch wel. Ah tiens, Flash is niet opgeladen, blijkbaar. Of misschien wel? Of misschien niet?

Fonts, pakweg Google Web Fonts in Chrome op Windows, maar in het algemeen alles wat tekstrendering is? Chrome kaka, zoals de gremlins zouden zeggen.

Ik krijg al jaren (járen) een aantal alerts per mail, per dag een stuk of tien-vijftien. En dan plots, sinds eind augustus, besluit GMail op zijn eentje dat zo ongeveer twee derde van mijn mailinglijsttrafiek en 90% van mijn alerts (allemaal met een label en regels om er vanalles mee te doen) spam is.

Ha ja, pech, zeggen de mensen op het internet.

Net zoals bij de fonts en de css-zooi en de Google account-strubbelingen en de plots niet meer werkende Feedburner-login en de valse beschuldigingen van klikfraude bij Adsense: bakt u een ei, zeggen de mensen van Google. Bakt u een ei, en wacht, laat nog wat profielinformatie achter die we kunnen doorverkopen.

Listen to anyone talk about schools today: classical education just can't keep up. In the digital generation's world of constant change, most schooling is profoundly boring. But what else is possible?

Het is eigenlijk wel grappig: ik kom de laatste tijd redelijk wat mensen tegen die heel erg blij zijn dat ze heel erg hoog scoren bij Google.

Kijk maar, zeggen ze: ik geef dit en dit woord in, en ik kom op mijn eigen site uit! Of als ik dat en dat ingeef, dan kom ik ook op mijn site terecht!

…tot ze uitloggen uit hun Google account, en ze plots geen gepersonaliseerde resultaten meer krijgen.

Oh, zeggen ze dan, we zijn teruggezakt. Maar we staan wél nog op de eerste pagina!

…tot ze Google gebruiken vanop een andere locatie, bijvoorbeeld.

Want Google doet alsmaar meer zijn best om u een plezier te doen: resultaten uit uw eigen regio, resultaten die lijken op websites waar de zoeker al naartoe geweest is, resultaten die lijken op resultaten waar al op geklikt is, etcetera, etcetera.

Die Search Engine Opmisation, ‘t is wel wat. Ik houd er mij al láng niet meer mee bezig, wegens (a) ook wel betere dingen te doen hebben dan achter de vodden van Google te lopen en vooral (b) het vertrouwen dat goede inhoud altijd wel zal bovendrijven. Maar zouden er nu in SEO-land panikeerders rondlopen?

Ik zag net—het kan zijn dat het al lang zo is—dat ik in Google nu ook manueel kan zeggen welke resultaten ik goed vind en welke resultaten ik niet meer wil zien:

Een icoontje om te promoten, en een icoontje om te removen.

Al die mensen die via valselijke SEO hun website bovenaan de resultaten gekregen hebben, zijn er dus aan voor de moeite?

Ja en nee, natuurlijk. De allerbeste manier om bovenaan de zoekresultaten te komen blijft uiteraard nog altijd eenvoudige omkoping:

Betaal gewoon wat geld aan Google, en alles komt in orde.

update ik zou beter eerst eens kijken op het internet. De rangschikking van de zoekresultaten heeft enkel invloed op mijn eigen resultaatvolgorde. Redelijk compleet nutteloos, dus.

Fake Steve Jobs had eigenlijk geen ongelijk, eigenlijk:

Dat ging een heel eind gemakkelijker dan verwacht: een account aanmaken bij Google Apps, de MX records (die zeggen waar d emailserver[s] voor @zog.org staanà aanpassen bij de mensen waar zog.org gehosted staat, en de kous was eigenlijk al af.

Ik kan blijkbaar alle mails van de oude GMail-account overpompen via POP (dat zal wel denk ik een paar dagen duren, zoveel dat het er zijn op die ene account sinds 2004), en ik heb dan ook maar meteen mijn Telenet-account afgesloten—of beter, alles van op Telenet rechtstreeks door mijn nieuwe @zog.org-mailaccount laten ophalen.

Een paar mailinglijsten uitgeschreven met @gmail.com en weer ingeschreven met @zog.org, en voor de rest laat ik die @zog.org gewoon alle @gmail.com binnenzuigen. En er staat een catch-all op @zog.org.

En het is met labels die me tonen waar de mail vandaan komt (:Z is naar @zog, :T is naar @telenet of zelfs nog @pandora, :G is naar @gmail):

‘t Ziet er zo op het eerste gezicht in orde uit. Ik ga dan nog eens moeten uitvissen hoe ik op een eenvoudige wijze mijn kalender en mijn Googletalk zo pijnloos mogelijk overgezet krijg.

Kijk nu, een bekende heeft zo’n AdSense-account.

Ik heb de sleutels van mijn site zijn in handen gegeven van die persoon, die dus bij deze mijn site controleert: administratorwachtwoord, the works. Als je het zo bekijkt: ik heb, formeel, mijn website doorgegeven, en ik schrijf er alleen nog maar op, als een onbezoldigde vrijwilliger.

Boven mijn advertenties staat “reclame”, wat niet kan geïnterpreteerd worden als een roep om onterechte clicks te genereren. Integendeel: het geeft duidelijk aan dat er een scheiding is met de redactionele inhoud van de site.

Nu, ik ben geblokkeerd voor AdSense, niet mijn website. Als iemand anders advertenties zet op een website die gemaakt wordt door iemand die drie jaar geleden geblokkeerd is, gaat die persoon dan ook geblokkeerd worden? De Terms of Service zwijgen in alle talen. Mijn vermoeden? Ja. Reden? Niet nodig om er één te geven, denk ik. En vragen naar een reden zal geen antwoord opleveren.

En, vermoed ik, duidelijkheid vragen zal ook niet lukken: het meest duidelijke antwoord dat ik verwacht, is iets als “doe dat niet, garanti dat ze bij Google die andere account meteen blokkeren, euh, en waarom? ja, geen idee, maar neem toch maar geen risico met die mannen van Google.”

Of de positieve versie ervan, natuurlijk: “tja, ‘ t is uw account en niet die site die geblokkeerd is, dus in principe zou het geen probleem mogen opleveren, maar, euh, ik zou het toch zelf niet durven doen, want zie dat ze mij meteen blokkeren! Met die mannen van Google weet ge nooit, namelijk.”

Als iemand me kan helpen met een antwoord, of me kan aanwijzen bij wie ik terecht kan die me een duidelijk, niet-ambigu antwoord kan geven: graag.

Vanavond nog eens geprobeerd om een echte mens aan de e-mail te krijgen bij Google, in verband met mijn bijna drie jaar geleden om alsnog onduidelijke redenen opgeschorte AdSense-account.

Het is een lang verhaal, maar het komt erop neer dat ze me ervan beschuldigen van fraude zonder te zeggen wie wat deed, en daar ik daardoor geen AdSense-dingen meer krijg. En vooral: dat iedereen die ook maar van ver of van dicht iets met mij te maken heeft (min of meer zelfde achternaam, min of meer zelfde adres) ook geen AdSense meer mag hebben. De boodschap die zij krijgen: “Your AdSense account was found to be related to an account previously disabled for invalid click activity and we have therefore disabled your account. Publishers disabled for invalid click activity are not allowed further participation in AdSense and do not receive any further payment.” 

Zonder verdere discussie mogelijk.

Ik ben wellicht niet de enige mens ter wereld die dit hier las met meer walging om zoveel hypocrisie dan wat anders.

Zeveraars, daar bij Google.

Tiens, dat ik dat nu pas merk, dat er bij Google experimentele dingen bijgekomen zijn?

Het blijft ook gewoon actief bij mij. Vreemd.
