Er waren veel dingen waar ik me vragen bij stelde tijdens het debat van gisteren, maar wat mij het meest vreemd van al leek, is waarom Bush zeker drie keer terugkwam op de nood aan multilaterale gesprekken met Noord-Korea en—vooral—de niet-noodzakelijkheid, wat zeg ik, de nutteloosheid, het gevaar, de complete bespottelijke idiotie van bilaterale gesprekken tussen de VS en Noord-Korea:
It’s not going to work if we open up a dialogue with Kim Jong Il. He wants to unravel the six- party talks, or the five-nation coalition that’s sending him a clear message.

The minute we have bilateral talks, the six-party talks will unwind. That’s exactly what Kim Jong Il wants.

Again, I can’t tell you how big a mistake I think that is, to have bilateral talks with North Korea. It’s precisely what Kim Jong Il wants. It will cause the six-party talks to evaporate. It will mean that China no longer is involved in convincing, along with us, for Kim Jong Il to get rid of his weapons. It’s a big mistake to do that.
We must have China’s leverage on Kim Jong Il, besides ourselves. And if you enter bilateral talks, they’ll be happy to walk away from the table. I don’t think that’ll work.

On North Korea, Bush charged that Kerry’s proposal to have direct talks with North Korea would end the six-nation diplomacy that the administration has pursued over Pyongyang’s nuclear ambitions. Kerry has said he would continue the six-party talks as well, but Bush said direct talks with North Korea would drive away China, a key player in the negotiations.
But each of the other four countries in the talks have held direct talks with North Korea during the six-party process — and China has repeatedly asked the Bush administration to talk directly with North Korea. Moreover, the Bush administration has talked directly to North Korean diplomats on the sidelines of the six-party talks, and Powell met with his North Korean counterpart over the summer.
Wat is hier precies aan de hand? Iemand? Apologeten voor Bush misschien? 🙂
In ieder geval zijn er inderdaad onlangs nog bilaterale gesprekken geweest. Zeer zeer zeer vreemd allemaal, and I’m genuinely puzzled.
De VS hebben het enkele jaren geleden al eens op een akkoordje gegooid met Kim Jong Il: de VS leverden olie- en voedselhulp aan Noord-Korea, op voorwaarde dat het land zijn ontwikkeling van kernwapens zou bevriezen. Noord-Korea heeft zich niet aan die afspraak gehouden. In feite wil het land, waarvan de economie volledig aan de grond zit en de bevolking honger lijdt, via chantage-spelletjes het onderste uit de kan halen zonder zijn politiek of economisch systeem te moeten bijsturen. De VS willen zich niet langer laten chanteren en daarom ziet Bush geen heil meer in verdere rechtstreekse onderhandelingen, maar willen ze dat buurland China het land tot de orde roept. Dat geen van beide kandidaten dit op een heldere manier kon uitleggen, maar het bij wazige, cryptische oneliners hield, toont aan dat “de kloof tussen burger en politiek” geen typisch Belgisch fenomeen is 😉
