Er begint binnenkort op Wikipedia een wedstrijd. Dit zijn de belangrijkste regels, samengevat:
- om ter ‘t meest artikels schrijven over [onderwerp] op de Engelstalige Wikipedia!
- artikels moeten eind november op Wikipedia staan
- artikels moeten minimum 1000 karakters leesbare tekst zijn en bronnen hebben
- er moet origineel schrijfwerk aan te pas komen, dus geen copy paste
- de telling zal geautomatiseerd zijn en gebeuren door een bot.
- er zullen geldelijke prijzen te winnen zijn
Iemand merkt op:
- “om ter ‘t meest” is niet noodzakelijk een goede metriek — goede artikels zijn vaak beter dan brol
- niemand zegt dat de artikels de delete-politie op 1 december overleefd moeten hebben, en kan alles wel automatisch gecontroleerd worden?
- de ‘normale’ standaard voor een begin-artikel is subbel zoveel als er hier gevraagd wordt
- mensen op Wikipedia motiveren met geld, is dat tegenwoordig ook al ‘done’?
Dus ja, er is wel iets over te zeggen.
De bal ging aan het rollen met deze mail op de mailinglijst:
I can’t believe this has got WMF funding, the idea of trying to create 100,000 stub articles on english wikipedia without any thought to how it’ll impact on the community.
I find it ironic that a competition is being funded to encourage current contributors to do what we wont accept from new editors. If a new editor was to create an article it wouldnt pass through the Articles for Creation process because its half the size of the minimum set there. Many of the competition articles will just get tagged CSD – A1, A7, A9 even G2
While there is a nice bot that will count the size of the prose, there is no automated process for checking copyright violations, checking for notability and most importantly checking for BLP with the aim of 100,000 the community will years to clean up the mess that is about to be created.

Geschreven in typisch histrionische stijl, kwestie dat het niet onopgemerkt voorbij gaat, maar bon, een aantal punten ter discussie, nee?
Neen dus.
Want oh juist, ik was vergeten vermelden dat het niet om een wedstrijd rond treinstations ging, of verkeersruispunten, of voetballers die minstens één minuut professioneel gespeeld hebben in hun leven, of kevers van Swaziland.
Het onderwerp van de wedstrijd is vrouwen, en dan mag elk Wikipedia-drama vermenigvuldigd worden met vele keren.
De eerste reactie merkte op dat er wél een automatische tool is om copyrightschendingen te vlaggen (NB niet al de andere criteria), maar de tweede reactie was er meteen bovenarms op:
“The nerve of these women, to think that they can write encyclopedia
articles on women who must inherently be non-notable! There’s nothing to
write about here.”That’s basically what your email says.
En hop, het spel zit op de wagen. Op een latere opmerking dat “calling people names isn’t helpful here” is het voorspelbare antwoord “I didn’t. I’m calling out the tone”.
Iemand anders reageert ook helemaal bedaard:
This is some sexist bullshit. You really think we can’t handle some stubs?
And do you really, really think that people won’t try to AFD everything
that comes out of this contest as it is?I’m sick and tired of this idea that we have to hold shit about women to a
higher standard than literally anything else. The encyclopedia isn’t going
to break because, god forbid, some inexperienced newbies write a bunch of
stubs.And so what if people think we’re paying lip service to women? It’s better
than being seen as being actively hostile to women, which, as I shouldn’t
have to remind you, is our reputation as it currently stands.
Twee keer raden wat de reactie zou zijn als iemand daarop zou antwoorden in de zin van “ik ben het eens met uw boodschap, maar de toon ervan is echt niet wat hij zou moeten zijn” of “op Wikipedia gaan we uit van de goede wil van alle betrokken personen” of “een modicum aan professionalisme zou niet verkeerd zijn”?
(Hint: tone policing is enkel verboten als het van de ‘andere’ kant komt.)
(Ten gronde vind ik persoonlijk het een fantastisch idee, minus de geldprijzen.)
