Ha, Histoire de Melody Nelson. Een plaat voor basgitaar en stem. En symfonische wall of sound. En sex (l’hôtel particulier! die violen!). En obsessie. De perfecte plaat (28 minuten!) om in bed te beluisteren met een koptelefoon op. Het is rock en jazz en Phil Spector samen en stapels beter, en dat allemaal 32 jaar geleden, maar gewoon tijdloos.

Gainsbourg heeft nog wel goeie platen gemaakt, maar Melody Nelson komt wel schrikbarend dicht bij de perfectie.

But they are not ?coalition forces?. Why does the BBC use this phrase? I repeat, why? Even in the Second World War, which so many journalists think they are now reporting, we didn?t use this lie. When we landed on the coast of North Africa in Operation Torch, we called it an ?Anglo-American landing?.

Het zou grappig zijn mocht het niet zo ongelooflijk schrijnend zijn: de amerikaanse krijgsgevangenen op Aljazeera. Ondervraagd door, leek het wel, niemand minder dan Borat Sagdiyev.

Die jongens (en dat meisje) zijn gewoon mecaniciens, die op het verkeerde moment op de verkeerde plaats waren.  Ze zijn overduidelijk versteven van de angst. Vies. Ik word er een beetje stil van. Ik hoop dat ze goed behandeld worden, enfin, beter dan de gevangen op Guantanamo toch. Het zou gewoon fantastisch zijn mochten de Irakezen die mensen verzorgen, eten en drinken geven, een rondleiding van Bagdad of een andere stad in de buurt, en dan met een informatiepakket weer zouden vrijlaten.
