Ik wil absoluut QuicktimeVR-panorama’s maken

Ik wil absoluut QuicktimeVR-panorama’s maken van de rotzooi die ons huis nu is, voor we aan verdere verbouwingen beginnen.

De Digital Ixus die ik heb, heeft zo’n bijgeleverd programmaatje om panorama’s bij elkaar te stitchen en ik heb een paar driepikkels liggen, dus dat zou moeten lukken. Enig obstakel is de software zelf vinden. De originele CD ligt ergens in de puinhoop, en is dus onvindbaar. Gelukkig houd ik alle verpakkingen van dingen die ik koop (anal? me? nah!), en zat er nog een franstalige ongeopende verpakking van handleidingen en CD’s en demosoftware bij.

Want downloaden van bij Canon, vergeet het! Die gasten laten we updates downloaden, maar de originele dingen, ho maar. Bah.

En nu dus kijken of de software nog werkt op XP.

Tiens, MetaDesign heeft een nieuwe

Tiens, MetaDesign heeft een nieuwe website. Wel fijn dat ze–wat anders–FF Meta gebruiken, maar de anti-aliasing is echt wel vies op een lcd. En ik vermoed op crt’s ook. Verder niet echt veel inhoud, ik ben ene beetje teleurgesteld.

Ik zou het echt appreciëren moest Erik Spiekerman bijvoorbeeld wat meer details geven over hoe hij werkt. En dingen. Een mens zou dan beginnen hopen dat er meer te vinden is op zijn eigen website, maar neen: en bijzonder mager beestje, met vooral veel “this section is empty at the moment” erin. Zwak.

En nog! Igor en Grishka hebben gisteren zelf op usenet geposted!

It might happen in our papers (as it happens in every paper) that certain technical details (ie formulations, expressions, etc.) could be discussed or improved. We are open to any kind of suggestions. But we fermely challenge anybody to demonstrate that our ideas do nos make sense.  What is important in theoretical physics?  (as in any conceptual activity)?  Essentially to propose and produce new ideas. And to make them appear as an element coherent with the existing corpus.  From this point of view, we do assume that our work meet those standards.

En zelfs Alan Sokal schrijft een reactie. Internet is wijs. En dat allemaal tijdens het weekend.

I’m quite comfortable with quantum groups, and it’s not the first time I’ve seen people try to make a connection between them and Planck-scale physics.  In fact, I’ve written a few papers on precisely this subject!  So, please tell me what this “clear connection” is supposed to be – in enough detail so I can see if there really is anything substantial here or not.  Merely speaking of a “clear connection”, without saying what it is, is not very convincing. En John Baez maakt in hetzelfde artikel nog een mysterieuze toespeling: “By the way, I no longer think the Bogdanoff’s papers are part of a Sokal-style hoax designed to poke fun at physics. I think something else is going on here.  Rich Monastersky is doing a story on this subject for the Chronicle of Higher Education, and with any luck it will contain some information that will shed a new light on the case.”

Enfin, meer dan ik begrijp te vinden hier en hier. Het meest troublerend vond ik deze:

Kijk, tot zo’n dingen leidt vermoeidheid. Ik wou de vorige entry echt niet in mijn weblog schrijven, dat was voor iets heel anders bestemd, en een stuk langer en een onderdeel van een geheel. Een soort weeklacht van het bestaan, wat anders?

En dan rijst de vraag: uitwissen of laten staan? Laten staan natuurlijk. Het is een bijzonder slippery slope als ik heelder entries zou gaan beginnen deleten omdat ze er eigenlijk niet horen te staan.

Toch vreemd, zo’n webloggersethiek. “Thou shalt not delete or substantially modify previous entries.” Zou daar al iets over geschreven zijn op tinternet? Vast wel.

Zelie had een droom dat een meneer haar rugzak gepakt had, en dat ze dus niet meer naar school kon gaan omdat ze geen koekjes meer kon meenemen. Ik heb met haar afgesproken dat we morgen samen naar haar rugzak gaan zoeken, maar zelfs àls we hem niet vinden, dat ze dan nog altijd met een andere rugzak, of met een plastiekzak, of met mijn computertas naar school mag gaan. Wat voor haar in orde was. Ze is weer gaan slapen.
