Het lezen lukt niet meer zo goed

In theorie zou ik, nu ik meer dan ooit in het openbaar vervoer zit, gelijk duizend boeken moeten kunnen lezen.

Maar in de praktijk dus niet. ‘s Morgens ben ik meestal te moe om mijn ogen open te houden, en ‘s avonds eigenlijk idem. Audioboeken, dat lukt nog net — maar ik lees vele keren sneller dan een audioboek gaat, dus in plaats van veel meer boeken te lezen met al de tijd die ik heb, lees ik er veel minder.

Pak de (uitstekende) autobiografie van Churchill die ik net uit heb, Walking with Destiny. Op papier is het 1152 bladzijden, wat dus op een week of zo zeker uit moet zijn. Maar in audioboekformaat is het 50 en een half uur, en aan pakweg gemiddeld een uur of drie per werkdag is dat gemakkelijk drie weken.

Gah!

Wat een miserie! Want audioboeken zijn zo wijs! Ik koop zelfs boeken die ik graag gelezen heb om ze opnieuw te horen maar dan verteld. Want mensen zijn gemaakt om verhalen te vertellen en verteld te worden, zoveel is wel duidelijk.
