Wacht wacht: er waren wel degelijk een heel aantal goeie dingen aan Order of the Phoenix, passop! Ik ben gewoon teleurgesteld, da’s alles, die entry van daarnet is geschreven geen tien seconden na de laatste pagina.

Bon. Dus even objectief: boek 5 is een stuk donkerder, nog altijd grappig, maar behoorlijk meer voor oudere kinderen dan de eerste boeken. Het is een beetje de Empire Strikes Back van Harry Potter, maar dan niet meteen omdat het het beste van de boeken is, maar omdat Harry in de baskuul staat tussen goed en slecht, en dat hij serieus wat dingen bijleert over zichzelf en de wereld.

Het aller, aller, allerbeste van het hele boek trouwens: Snape en James Potter.

Boek lezen dus. Geen discussie over. Mocht ik een dochter/zoon hebben die het nu nog niet kan lezen wegens niet voldoende Engels, ik zou het denk ik hoofdstuk per hoofstuk simultaanvertalend voorlezen.

I was totally prepared to love Order of the Phoenix to bits. Sadly, Harry Potter’s fifth outing is about as disappointing a book as I’ve ever read. It’s not that it’s a bad book, far from it. It’s that it could have been a lot better.

I’m not going into spoilers (much), but suffice it so say it’s more or less exactly the same book as the previous Harry Potter books. Except Harry, Ron and Hermione are in a bad mood for most of the book.

As before, Hagrid gets himself into trouble. Except this time I can’t for the life of me imagine what Hagrid actally *did* that was useful. As a matter of fact: there’s a number of subplots in the book, most of them involving Hagrid, that should have been cut–and that make me wonder whether there was an editor involved with this book at all.

Also as before, the person you expect to be the bad guy isn’t. Only now I was expecting that, so the revelation didn’t come as a big surprise.

The one thing J.K. Rowling has let slip, is that one important protagonist dies. And that she was totally devastated after having “killed” that person. Well, that only goes to show she’s more attached to the people she writes about than her readers. Or at least this reader. The death was irrelevant, not particularly interesting or even necessary, and the person who died was thoroughly unsympathetic by the end of the book anyway.

Oh well, too bad.
I’ll have another go at Harry Potter in a few years’ time.

Voilà, Order of the Phoenix is uit.

Niet evident, wegens heel de dag op de kinderen gepast en dan naar Sofie gaan kijken en alles. Kindje is klein en donker en het heet Jules.

Harry Potter: niet goed. Enfin ja, niet slecht hoor, maar zeker (zéker) niet goed. Om samen te vatten: identiek hetzelfde boek als het vorige, maar deze keer is iedereen slechtgezind.

Hagrid raakt weer in de problemen, maar deze keer is er helemaal geen enkel excuus waarom.

De persoon waarvan men zou denken dat hij/zij de slechte is, is dat weer eens niet. Met dat verschil dat hetzelfde truukje al gebruikt is in de vier vorige boeken, dus dat het nu niet meteen een verrassing was.

J.K. Rowling had al lang op voorhand gezegd dat er iemand belangrijk zou doodgaan. Wel, misschien ligt het aan mij, maar tegen dat we zover waren kon het mij niet echt veel schelen.

En dan die al even lang op voorhand voorspelde “romance” van Harry met een meisje… pfff. The least said the better.

Nee, geen goeie Harry Potter.

Het zou kunnen dat ik me vergis natuurlijk. Ik zal nog eens de hele serie na elkaar moeten herlezen.

Sofie is aan het bevallen. Ze heeft om kwart na vijf vanmorgen gebeld dat het zover was (en eigenlijk wel ruim op tijd, ik denk dat ze al meer dan een week overtijd was), Sandra is nu naar Oudenaarde om op Emil te passen, we zien dan wel wanneer ze thuis komt. Ik zou vandaag eens langs Sint-Denijs kunnen passeren, eens vragen of het past.

En gisteren heb ik niet verder kunnen lezen in Harry Potter: boodschappen doen, en dan ’s avonds samen gekeken naar de tweede DVD van seizoen twee van The West Wing. En dus zit ik nog maar aan pagina 207. Nog 559 te gaan vandaag.

Went & bought new Harry Potter. Also: 6.1 stereo system for computer. Will not be back at said computer until Harry Potter is finished.

Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix is toegekomen.

We gaan nu boodschappen doen, en dan stop ik niet met lezen tot het boek uit is.

Bush “professional fascist”

New Zealand’s TV3 unexpectedly put on a graphic that described President George Bush as a “professional fascist” for a few seconds during primetime news.

The real graphic was supposed to announce an upcoming weather report.

TV3 spokesman Roger Beaumont said the network was thoroughly investigating the mislabelled graphic.

“It was an absolute case of human error. The fact that it made it to air was extremely unfortunate and we apologise for any offence that may have been taken.

“What I can assure you is that it was a completely unintentional mistake.”

The TV station apologises for the incidence, and don’t rule out diciplinary action against whoever is responsible. Even though it was completely unintentional. Sure!

Swedish bands!

Yeah yeah yeah. So I pre-ordered my Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix at Amazon like the rest of the world.

They’re really good books, don’t get me wrong. But surely they’re not that good, are they? They’re not Moby Dick good. They’re not even, in my opinion, Terry Pratchett good.

Whatever–I’m definitely curious to see if the fifth book is any good. I’ve had my grubby little paws on a bootleg internet version (hasn’t everybody?), but I refuse to believe that the 333 pages of drivel I’ve read the first few chapters of was the Real McCoy.

“The electric fire flew across the room” is one sentence Rowling’s just read on TV in the Jeremy Paxman interview, and that’s not in there. So that settles that.

I found the last book predictable in its inpredictability. Erm. If that makes sense at all.

Oh well. One more day and we’ll know everything. I think I’ll have a quick look to see the status of my order at Amazon.
