    In the end, I suppose it winds up being more voyeuristic than anything, playing to a morbid fascination with just how far the depths of idiocy can go, just how awful people can be. Still, it serves to remind us that, yes, there are people who walk this Earth who really think this way and who, for the time being, are not going anywhere.

It's to promote their next CD, Hot Sauce Committee Part 2, which comes out on May 3. I never met a Beastie Boys album I didn't like, and from the sounds of things, this will be no exception

    Urgh. Ik kreeg kippenvel van dit artikel over mevrouw Spears. Ze blijkt gewoon gevangen gehouden te worden door haar eigen vader.

    If only the outrage over a rehabilitated 29-year-old woman becoming the personal and financial property of a man she never even liked was half as loud as the chorus that once proclaimed her sexual ‘antics’ as degrading to women.

    Het was al erg in 2008, maar nu is het nog veel erger.

    Didn't you notice right from the start the palpable difference between what is happening in Libya and what is happening elsewhere? How in both Tunisia and Egypt we really did see massive popular gatherings, whereas in Libya there is nothing of the kind? An Arabist friend of mind has concentrated in the last few weeks on translating the placards, banners, posters and flags that were such a feature of the Tunisian and Egyptian demonstrations: he couldn't find a single example of these in Libya, not even in Benghazi. One very striking fact about the Libyan ‘rebels', which I'm surprised you didn't note, is that you don't see a single woman, whereas in Tunisia and Egypt women are very visible.

    Ik vind dat altijd zo raar, foto’s van kinderen van lang geleden. Spitalfield nippers, 1912:

  • Velomaker

    Vorige dinsdag was het achterwiel van mijn fiets ad patres. Drie spaken kapot (dank u, fietsenstalling aan de Dampoort) en zowel buiten- als binnenband om zeep (dank u, scherpe stenen overal wegens verbouwingen).

    Naar de velomaker in de straat. Vijven en zessen later: de mens achter de toog waait mij uit de verte toe “is het voor uw fiets?”

    “Euh nee, ’t is voor nen nieuwen hoed” is op zo’n moment geen goed idee: mensen in winkels zijn soms gelijk politiemensen als het op ironie en sarcasme aankomt. Zij hebben het alleenrecht, namelijk. Zelf iets in die zin doen is een recept voor miserie.

    Ik dus heel erg beleefd beamen dat het ja, voor mijn fiets is, dat mijn achterwiel aan vervanging toe is.

    “Oh, dat zal niet meer gaan voor vandaag hoor meneer.” En vóór ik kan vragen voor wanneer het wel zou passen: “En ’t zal voor deze week ook niet meer zijn. En ge moet ook niet terugkomen vandeweek want het zal dan ook niet lukken.”

    De namiddag dan naar de velomaker in de buur van het werk gegaan. Fiets ingeleverd: geen enkel probleem, het kwam allemaal in orde. Het zou wél pas voor dinsdag zijn, en of dat wel kon? Welzeker dat dat kon. Quitte dat het een week zou zijn, als de fiets maar gerepareerd werd, dank u voor het briefje, tot dinsdag.

    Vandaag  — het is dinsdag! — naar de velomaker teruggekeerd, mijn briefje bovengehaald, binnengestapt met een zak vol geld om te geven aan die brave mensen, helemaal klaar om naar huis te fietsen na een week te voet te gaan.

    En dan zag ik dat er dinsdag 12 april stond: twee weken voor een nieuw wiel. Is er iets speciaals in het land of zo, dat iedereen zijn fiets laat repareren of zo?

    Audio Demos – Paris Smaragdis
    Audio editors are pretty lousy, you can’t use a graphical interface to do anything useful when editing sound mixtures. In this demo we present an audio-driven interface which allows a user to vocalize the sound they want to select and an automatic process matches that input to the most appropriate sound. Once the selection is done then we can manipulate sounds independently and then throw them back in the mix.
