    Nook Simple Touch compared to Kindle 3 – Marco.org
    My ideal e-reader would be the Nook hardware and interface, but backed by the Kindle’s ecosystem and services. It’s easier for Amazon to achieve Nook-like hardware design than for B&N to achieve a Kindle-like ecosystem, so it’s much more likely that the next Kindle will be a better fit than the current (or next) Nook.

Evidently I’ve been paying more and more attention to what could rightly be called cosmetics. Sure there are bad conventions and, well, better ones. Admittedly, coding conventions are just that, conventions. No matter how much we debate tabs vs. spaces and how much we search for truth, they remain subjective and very much a personal preference. Yet, one can’t deny that there are some better conventions that do in fact improve the overall quality of the code.

    The Kindle MOBI format implements only a limited subset of HTML and provides no access to the underlying rendering algorithm, so currently we cannot save native ebooks on the device. However, the Kindle 3 ships with a WebKit-based browser, so we can use JavaScript and CSS to dynamically reflow and style web content on the device. This article outlines an approach to implement hyphenation & justification on the Kindle with support for “advanced” features like hanging punctuation and non-rectangular paragraph shapes. Because of the immense diversity of gelatinous plankton, jelly-like creatures can individually have each of these properties. However this way of looking at them both overstates and underestimates their true diversity. Taxonomically, they are far more varied than a handful of exemplars that are used to represent jellyfish or especially the so-called "true" jellyfish. Ecologically, they are even more adaptable than one would expect by looking only at the conspicuous bloom forming families and species that draw most of the attention. In reality, the most abundant and diverse gelatinous groups in the ocean are not the ones that anyone ever sees.

  • Een kwestie van smaak

    Serieus, Bart Staes? Serieus? Een bende van 250 luddieten vernietigt een wetenschappelijk experiment, en dit is alles wat de kerel erover te zeggen heeft?

    Europarlementslid Bart Staes (Groen!) vindt het een goede zaak dat het debat weer wordt opengebroken. ‘Of men voor dit soort acties is, is een kwestie van smaak. Maar burgers hebben het recht om zich op vreedzame wijze te verzetten als een monopolistische industrie als de biotechindustrie bepaalde technologie aan de samenleving wil opdringen. Deze actie is een vorm van democratische strijd.’

    Ik zal dat hard onthouden, dat dat allemaal zomaar gepermitteerd is. De volgende keer dat de brave jongens en meisjes van Groen! iets organiseren kom ik het ook kapotstampen, bij wijze van democratische strijd.

    Ik begin al meteen met het voorstel van mevrouw Pyrins: bakfietsen moeten op de rijbaan, blijkbaar. Ze zijn er gelijk achter gekomen wat bakfietsen zijn — met de woorden van Fokke van der Meulen: “de hippie versies van een 4X4: te groot. te lelijk. hoort niet thuis in de stad. hoort thuis op het platte land”.

    Ik ben daar helemaal tegen bakfietsen op de openbare weg. Op democratische wijze natuurlijk. Ik denk dat ik wat bakfietsbanden ga kapotsnijden, helemaal vreedzaam en zo.

  • Volhouden Bart!

    Ik was vandaag in de buurt van iemand die het helemaal zag zitten. Hij wist voor elk probleem een oplossing.

    Doping in de het wielrennen? Nonsens! De ex-ploegmaats van Lance Armstrong, dát zijn de boeven, schurken, afvallige verraders, het laagste soort mens op aarde: zwijg gewoon over die doping van Armstrong, ze hebben het altijd al gedaan, “zelfs die zogenaamde God van jullie, die Eddy Merckx”.

    Ik kon een “euh ja, en wat wil dat nu eigenlijk zeggen, wat u daar zegt?” niet tegenhouden.

    Een beetje later ging het over Griekenland, en ook daar: hevige emoties, duidelijke opinies, eenvoudige oplossingen. De man had gehoord dat ze daar allemaal twee of drie jobs hebben: hoe komen ze erbij? Eén job en daar moeten ze het mee doen! Is er corruptie? afschaffen! Gewoon mee ophouden, zo simpel is het! Het schijnt gaan ze er ook op pensioen op hun 53 of zo? Waanzin! Laat ze gewoon allemaal werken tot hun 65 of langer!

    Urgh. Ik heb zelfs niet de moeite gedaan om te doen alsof ik er mij in zou beginnen opwinden. De meeste probelemen hebben geen eenvoudige oplossing.
