    Over the last few weeks, I created a computer game set in the Arctic. Or maybe I’ve been working on it since 1981. It all depends on how you count. All I know for sure is that I programmed the original version of Arctic Adventure in Radio Shack TRS-80 Level II BASIC when I was in high school. (It’s possible I did at least some of that work in 1980, though it was published in 1981.) In 2021, I put a debugged and slightly expanded version on the web. And in late January and early February of this year, I used Anthropic’s Claude Code to treat my ancient TRS-80 Level II BASIC code as raw material for a fancy, modern edition of Arctic Adventure. The new version even adds one meaningful feature the 1981 edition didn’t have at all: graphics.

    Israeli soldiers fired nearly a thousand bullets during the massacre of 15 Palestinian aid workers in southern Gaza on March 23, 2025—with at least eight shots fired at point blank range—according to a joint investigation by the independent research groups Earshot and Forensic Architecture.     Arabness before Islam: Views from Poetry and Genealogical Literature

    Was the construction of Arabness a purely Islamic phenomenon or was there already a pre-existing conception of Arab identity before Islam? Most scholars have accepted that “Arab” is an appropriate term for the pre-Islamic inhabitants of Arabia Deserta, while noting abundant problems posed by the available evidence. In particular, it has been observed that “Arab” is exceedingly rare in pre-Islamic poetry, lending support to the possibility that names such as Maʿadd were overtaken by “Arab,” as a product of a religious (Islamic) ethnogenesis. This study addresses the question through a comprehensive survey of poetical and onomastic attestations.

    The current review aims to provide professionals with scientific support for choosing an appropriate typeface by collecting scattered data in a single place. We describe the findings of 34 studies that asked participants to rate the perception of 229 qualities in 635 typefaces, and we created a unified dataset where data are easily comparable across multiple studies.     nI a move that has delighted fans of classic science fiction, Warner Bros. Discovery has begun uploading full episodes of the iconic series Babylon 5 to YouTube, providing free access to the show just as it departs from the ad-supported streaming platform Tubi.   • Momentous decisions

    ’t Zijn dingen: er was maandag meeting, en nu hangen er mogelijk belangrijke beslissingen in de lucht.

    Mijn referentiekader is sinds ik op mijn huidig werk al wat veranderd: “binnenkort” kan tegenwoordig afhankelijk van de omstandigheden uren, dagen, weken, maanden of zelfs jaren zijn.

    In dat kader is er binnenkort — pakweg in de loop van begin 2027 — een belangrijke beslissing te nemen. Die wil zeggen dat er tegen binnenkort — pakweg zes zeven maand — het één en het ander zal moeten afgewogen worden. En dat wil zeggen dat we binnenkort — eigenlijk één dezer weken — zeer hard moeten beginnen nadenken.

    In datzelfde kader is er binnenkort — pakweg tegen midden of eind 2027 — een andere belangrijke beslissing te nemen. Die wil zeggen we binnenkort — eigenlijk vanaf volgende week — zeer hard moeten beginnen nadenken en plannen en spreken en doen.

    En verder moet ik binnenkort — vóór het einde van deze week — genoeg nagedacht hebben om binnnenkort — maandag — iets in gang te zetten dat binnenkort — tegen pakweg mei — eigenlijk al serieus onderweg zou moeten zijn.

    Het is wel leutig eigenlijk, tegenwoordig, met allemaal draaiende borden in de lucht. Wachten op het eerste dat neerkletst, ook, natuurlijk.

  • Dunk & Egg

    Ik weet hoe de dingen gaan, en ik weet wat er nog allemaal gaat gebeuren (ongeveer, want de man heeft het nog niet allemaal geschreven, grrr), maar de serie is echt wel heel goed.

    Contente mens hier, van A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms. De voorlaatste aflevering was uitstekend, met een verhaal dat eigenlijk op één paragraaf kan verteld worden maar toch geen moment uitgerokken voelde.

    En wat een acteerprestatie van Peter Claffey.

  • Vergaderingendag

    Het was een van die vergaderdagen. Het viel uiteindelijk eigenlijk allemaal wel mee, maar er zal wel veel te rapporteren zijn op de volgende teamprojectdag.

    Upshot of it all: we gaan nog wat meer in gang kunnen schieten, op meer dan één project.

    Er is veel werk, maar ik heb gelijk het gevoel dat het allemaal wel zal lukken.

  • Den hof: het gaat beginnen

    Het begint allemaal een beetje in de buurt van lente te komen, ziet, allemaal tulpen die aan het uitkomen zijn:

    Alleen de Isotoma fluviatilis is niet helemaal om zeep. Mogelijk zou ik wel eens kunnen een hele resem van die kleine platjes kunnen kopen en dan overal planten. Maar het is wel heel veel werk, en het lijkt echt helemaal niet op wat de reclame zegt. Twee keer raden wat het internet is en wat hier:

    Afijn.

    Ik ga hard moeten beginnen nadenken over:

    • pepers zaaien binnen en op laten groeien tot ik ze ergens in mei of zo aan de muur kan hangen
    • de japanse esdoorn eens bijknippen, dat hij toch een beetje in de hoogte groeit in plaats van alleen maar in de breedte

    Er is een verklaring waarom ik — en ongetwijfeld de rest van de websitemakende wereld — lokale dingen op 8000 of 8008 of 8080 of zoals hieronder 8088 laat draaien:

    Dat is nog geen reden, want ’t is niet omdat 80 traditioneel is waar http op draait, dat we lokale websites niet zouden kunnen doen antwoorden op pakweg 6767 of 2391.

    Ik moet er wel altijd een beetje om lachen, dat ik weet dat het niet moet maar dat ik het toch doe uit een soort ikweetnietwat. Cargo cult cijfers.

    Net zoals ik daarjuist echt letterlijk — letterlijk letterlijk, niet figuurlijk letterlijk — zeker een halve minuut hardop heb moeten lachen om wat in het begin van deze (overigens uitstekende) tutorial gezegd werd:

  • Daar is hij!

    Ziet, ’t is vrijdag! We hebben niet 100% gedaan gekregen wat ik had gehoopt gedaan te krijgen deze week, maar het kwam toch verdacht hard in de buurt. Ik ga dit weekend nog wat vrijwilligerswerkt doen voor het werk, van die dingen die niet echt nodig zijn maar die ik gewoon wil doen omdat het echt wel wijs is om iets te zien groeien.

    Daarnaast was ik al van in decenmber aan het wachten op een reeks leveringen uit China, van iets dat toen in een opwelling besteld had omdat ik het plan had opgevat om Iets Te Maken Dat Ik Nog Nooit Had Gemaakt Had. Mijn eerste fout daarbij was dat ik dacht dat ik het rappoer in mijn handen zou hebben als ik op het interweb bestelde in plaats van er in een lokale winkel om te gaan. Mijn tweede fout was op “bestel nu” te klikken in plaats van de bestelling en vooral het leveradres eerst even na te kijken.

    Het bleken negen pakketjes te zijn van negen verschillende leveranciers, die allemaal geleverd gingen worden op het adres waar ik de vorige keer mijn Chinesiumbestelling had laten leveren: bij Adhese, het werk waar ik al sinds januari 2018 niet meer werk. :/

    Gelukkig zijn het daar nog altijd fijne mensen en zagen ze het zitten om de pakketjes af te wachten tot ik ze allemaal samen kon gaan afhalen. Ik kon het volgen op de website van de Chinees, hoe één voor één de pakjes in transit waren en uiteindelijk in de eerste week van februari allemaal geleverd waren.

    En dan contacteerde Lode van Adhese mij gisteren om te laten weten dat er ondertussen al een paar maand drie pakjes aan het wachten lagen. Euh drie? Ik dacht negen? Nee, drie dus.

    Ik erom gegaan, ’t waren er inderdaad drie — maar kijk!

    Het waren gedimme drie pakjes maar in twee van de pakjes zaten nog eens vier pakjes! Ik heb de pakjes in de pakjes nog eens uitgepakt, en het ziet er naar uit dat het ene ding waar ik alle andere dingen rond gekocht heb, niet in de bestelling zat. Dus dat ik dan nog eens een bestelling zal moeten doen — maar ondertussen is de goesting eigenlijk al een beetje over voor het ding dat ik wou maken. Wat nu?

    Voorlopig alles proper bij elkaar leggen, en dan nog eens hard nadenken, denk ik. Want ondertussen heb ik al drie andere dingen die ik absoluut wil maken in mijn hoofd.

  • The Mistress

    We zijn nog eens gaan eten bij denk ik toch wel mijn favoriete restaurant op het moment. The Mistress, telkens weer een fantastische mix van Iraans en Zuidoostaziatisch. Een menu om te delen, optionele side dishes, uitstekende cocktails, niet van het allergoedkoopste ter wereld maar zijn prijs meer dan waard.

    Wij hadden, na een aantal amuses:

    • Amber kinilaw — Fillipijns-geïnspireerd, met vis en een heerlijke pompoenvinaigrette met habanero en walnoot.
    • Chicken bulgogi — Koreaans-geïnspireerde kippendij met komkommerkimchi.
    • Een roll van bloemkool in yoghurtmarinade in een huisgemaalte naan, met sojamayonaise, augurk en granaatappel.
    • Mandarin duck — Chinees-geïnspireerde zeer dun gesneden plakjes eend met five spice-saus (kassia, steranijs, szechuanpeper, venkel en kruidnagel, zegt het interweb mij), en paksoy en chili met citroengrasrijst met sesam.
    • Space Bomb: een crispy wonton met garnaal, kippendijen en wasabi.
    • Mandu: dim sum met varkensvlees en yuzu miso, met home-made chili en kastanjechampignon.
    • Golden Katsu: krokante kip gelakt met gochujang, met katsusaus en kimchi op een vel nori.
    • En als dessert sweet kiss, dat een soesje bleek te zijn met ik weet niet wat erin maar ’t was wel heerlijk.

    Ik kijk er hard naar uit dat het menu verandert, dan hebben we een excuus reden om er nog eens naartoe te gaan. 🙂

  • Woensdag?

    Zeer zeker, woensdag. De tijd vliegt voorbij, ge hebvt er geen gedacht van. Ik zeg al jaren om te lachen elke dag van de week vanaf maandagmiddag dat het bijna weekend is, maar het voelt eigenlijk echt wel zo aan.

    Case in point: een collega werkt drie vijfden. Maandag had ik écht geen tijd om iets anders te doen dan wat ik gedaan heb, en dinsdag eigenlijk ook niet — maar zij had uiteraard wel doorgewerkt en dingen gemaakt die ik vrijdag wil tonen, en we moesten daar dus zeker eens over spreken.

    En dan was het dinsdag en voor ge het weet is het woensdag en kunnen we er wel over spreken, maar voor haar is het functioneel al vrijdag, en voor ge het weet is het écht vrijdag.

    Afijn, we hebben er wel over gesproken, maar het gaat dus allemaal zeer rap, is my point.
