Stop giving Wikipedia money | Newslines – The Story of Everything
Don’t donate to Wikipedia. It doesn’t need the money, and anything you donate will not go to the people who actually created the pages that you like. It doesn’t even go to the admins who help check the content. It doesn’t go to content creation at all.

The Real Mr. Difficult, or Why Cthulhu Threatens to Destroy the Canon, Self-Interested Literary Essayists, and the Universe Itself. Finally. | The Los Angeles Review of Books
I may as well state my claim in as straightforward a way as possible: H. P. Lovecraft, he of the squamous and eldritch, is wrongly derided as a bad writer. Lovecraft is actually a difficult writer.

Girls and Software | Linux Journal
When we call a man a "technologist", we mean he's a programmer, system administrator, electrical engineer or something like that. The same used to be true when we called a woman a "technologist". However, according to the new breed, a female technologist might also be a graphic designer or someone who tweets for a living. Now, I'm glad that there are social media people out there—it means I can ignore that end of things—but putting them next to programmers makes being a "woman in tech" feel a lot like the Programmer Special Olympics.

The Shape of Rome » Ex Urbe

Valeria Lukyanova, the Human Barbie Doll
I realize that just like everyone reading about Human Barbie, I had had a simple narrative prepared in my head: A small-town girl grows up obsessed with dolls, etc. Instead, I get a racist space alien.

The Evil Marketing Genius of Paula Deen, the New Face of Diabetes – Daniel D. Snyder – Health – The Atlantic
Yesterday, television personality and southern food mogul Paula Deen stopped by NBC's Today show and revealed to Al Roker — and the rest of the world — that she has been living with type 2 diabetes for several years. The carefully staged appearance — and the rumors circulating about it for days before — is one of the first steps in Deen's quest to rebrand herself as the new patron saint of healthy foods. But her approach to the issue has angered her critics, new and old, who feel she's deliberately avoiding any tangible connection between the butter-heavy diet she's spent years promoting on various Food Network programs and the onset of her disease.

Incredible photos of Jellyfish by Alexander Semenov — Lost At E Minor: For creative people
In 2007, Russian underwater photographer Alexander Semenov graduated from Lomonosov’s Moscow State University in the department of Zoology. He specialized in the study of invertebrate animals, with an emphasis on squid brains. Soon after, he began working at the White Sea Biological Station (WSBS) as a senior laborer. After four years of working at the WSBS dive station, he became chief of the diving team. He now organizes all WSBS projects, and dives by himself, always with a camera.
Of his sea life photography, he writes: ‘When I first began to experiment with sea life photography, I tried shooting small invertebrates for fun with my own old camera and without any professional lights or lenses. I collected the invertebrates underwater and then I shot them in the lab. After two or three months of failure after failure, I ended up with a few good pictures, which inspired me to buy a semi-professional camera complete with underwater housing and strobes. I’ve spent the following field season trying to shoot the same creatures, but this time in their environment. It was much more difficult, and I spent another two months without any significant results. But when you’re working at something every day, you inevitably get a lot of experience. Now after four years of practice, I get a few good shots almost every time I dive’.

The Final Years of Curly (of Three Stooges Fame) – Mental Floss
In 1932, Jerome Howard (soon to be universally known as “Curly”) joined the Three Stooges comedy team. He was replacing his older brother, Shemp, as the third Stooge, joining his older brother Moe and frizzly haired Larry Fine.

In 1934, the team signed with Columbia Pictures and began churning out the series of comedy slapstick shorts that were to bring hilarity to the world. Within a year, Curly had established himself as the comedy star of the act. His “woo-woo”s and “n’yuk nyuk”s, as well as his incredible gift for physical, inventive, surreal comedy, made Curly Howard everyone’s favorite Stooge. On the 60th anniversary of his passing, here’s a look back at Curly’s later years.

The Real Story Behind Apple’s ‘Think Different’ Campaign – Forbes
In writing this story, I’ve drawn from handwritten, dated creative journals I’ve diligently chronicled throughout my agency career as well as files I saved from the 1997 Apple time period (being a packrat often proves useful). In these journals are countless pages of notes and concepts I jotted down during the process of trying to bring Apple back to prominence. I also found the original “To the crazy ones” television script I presented to Jobs, as well as a plethora of rough drafts.

While I’ve seen a few inaccurate articles and comments floating around the Internet about how the legendary “Think Different” campaign was conceived, what prompted me to share this inside account was Walter Isaacson’s recent, best-selling biography on Steve Jobs. In his book, Isaacson incorrectly suggests Jobs created and wrote much of the “To the crazy ones” launch commercial. To me, this is a case of revisionist history.
