    Origins of the Sicilian Mafia: The Market for Lemons
    In this article, we study the emergence of an extractive institution that hampered economic development in Italy for more than a century: the Sicilian mafia. Since its first appearance in the late 1800s, the reasons behind the rise of the Sicilian mafia have remained a puzzle. In this article, we argue that the mafia arose as a response to an exogenous shock in the demand for oranges and lemons, following Lind's discovery in the late eighteenth century that citrus fruits cured scurvy. More specifically, we claim that mafia appeared in locations where producers made high profits from citrus production for overseas export. Operating in an environment with a weak rule of law, the mafia protected citrus production from predation and acted as intermediaries between producers and exporters. Using original data from a parliamentary inquiry in 1881–1886 on Sicilian towns, the Damiani Inquiry, we show that mafia presence is strongly related to the production of oranges and lemons. The results hold when different data sources and several controls are employed.

    Vrijdag was mijn laatste dag Adhese. Het was tegelijkertijd ook mijn eerste dag Namahn. En eigenlijk ook niet, wegens denk ik bijna de helft van de nieuwe collega’s (10 van de 21) waren acht jaar geleden ook al collega’s.

    Acht. Jaar. Geleden.

    Maar serieus, hoe rap gaat het leven? En tegelijkertijd, hoe weinig verandert er? Dag op dag acht jaar geleden had ik een kapotte computer. Niet de eerste keer, en absoluut niet de laatste keer, en wat ik toen schreef, geldt nog altijd onverminderd: ik kan nog altijd alle computers kapot krijgen. 🙂

    Maar hey, ik ga terug werken aan de andere kant van het land. Elke dag trein en metro. ‘t Morgens de rechtstreekse trein Dampoort-Brussel, ‘s avonds met wat geluk de rechtstreekse terug, en anders via Sint-Pieters.

    Van en naar de trein podcast en/of audioboek, op de trein werk of boek. Eindelijk weer tijd voor boeken!

  • Die keer dat ik een verhaaltje vertelde voor kleine kindjes

    Ik was mijn computer aan het opkuisen, want het is morgen mijn laatste dag bij Adhese, en maandag mijn eerste dag bij Namahn. 

    Dat opkuisen, dat houdt niet zo enorm veel in: alle werkfiles staan op de werk-gedeelde-drive-in-de-klaawd, en alle persoonlijke files staan op Onedrive of mijn eigen gedeelde drive-in-de-klaawd, alle geprogrammeerde dingen staan op Github, alle mails stonden al in Gmail, en alle programma's zijn opnieuw te downloaden en te herinstalleren, of het nu Office of Adobe of iets anders is.

    Maar hier en daar staat er dan eens een bestand te blinken dat enkel en alleen op die ene laptop stond. Zoals die keer dat we bij Datakamp besloten hadden dat ik een verhaaltje zou vertellen aan kleine kindjes, en dat ik in de rapte backstage een draftje schreef.

    Dag kindjes. Jullie zijn hier nu op Datakamp, maar weten jullie eigenlijk wat data is?

    Data, dat zijn héél persoonlijke dingen, zoals jouw naam en hoe oud je bent. 

    Zeg eens, wie is hier al eens op Youtube geweest? En waar kijk je dan naar?  

    Wie is hier al eens naar de film geweest, in de bioskoop? En naar welke film? En weten jullie dat papa en mama daar centjes voor moeten betalen, om naar zo'n film te gaan kijken?

    Maar op Youtube, moet jij daar centjes voor betalen? Neen hé. En weten jullie waarom je daar eigenlijk geen centjes voor moet betalen? Dat is omdat jullie allemaal betalen met data.

    Elke keer dat je een fimpje op Youtube bekijkt, zeg je tegen de grote baas van Youtube wie je bent, en waar je woont, en dan weet hij precies waar jij graag naar kijkt. En dan gaat hij jou  allemaal andere filmpjes tonen die jij ook graag ziet.  

    En dan verdient de grote baas van Youtube veel centjes met allemaal reclame op die filmpjes. 

    Maar is dat wel een goed idee, denk je?  

    Want zeg eens, als bijvoorbeeld een oude man met een baard en een rare hoed op straat zou vragen wat jullie naam is, zouden jullie dat dan zeggen? En als hij zou vragen waar jullie wonen, zouden jullie dat dan zeggen? Nee toch hé? 

    Of als er iemand die je niet kent jou koekjes zou geven, zomaar op straat, zou je die dan opeten?  Nee toch hé.  

    Maar op YouTube doe je dat dus wel. Daar geef je al je data zomaar aan de grote baas van Youtube! En die geeft jou allemaal vieze computerkoekjes!

    Gelukkig bestaat er een manier om dat allemaal niet te doen. Jullie papa's en mama's kennen dat ongetwijfeld: je doet ctrl-shift-N en je open een pornovenster. Dat is helemaal anoniem, zo weet niemand wie je bent, en kun je helemaal veilig op het internet.  

    Dus niet vergeten: straks allemaal vragen aan mama en papa hoe het pornovenster werkt.  

    Morgen hebben we het over elliptische curve-encryptie in combinatie met DNSSEC om de veiligheid van het domeinnaamsysteem te verbeteren. Dáág kindjes!

    Ze noemen mij ook wel eens de kindervriend, ja.

  • ‘t Is blijkbaar podcastmaand

    Kelly zegt dat toch, en wie ben ik om dat tegen te spreken?

    Bij deze dus: mijn favoriete podcasts die ook allemaal beluister! Er zijn er nog wel andere die ik incidenteel eens opleg (This American Life bijvoorbeeld, dat meestal goed is, maar dat minder door één stem gemaakt wordt, en waar ik niet zeker van ben dat ik het graag ga horen, waardoor ik er minder tijd voor kan maken, gelijk).

    In alfabetische volgorde:

    • Anglo Saxon England Podcast: toen David Crowther al een tijdje bezig was aan zijn History of England (zie later) en hij de eerste afleveringen herbeluisterde, besefte hij dat er eignelijk veel meer te vertellen was dan hij verteld had. En besloot hij dus te herbeginnen met het begin van de geschiedenis. Naast zeer goed ook hilarisch grappig.
    • Dan Carlin’s Hardcore History: Dan Carlin, zo zegt hij zelf alle vijf voet, is géén historicus, maar wel een geïnteresseerde mens. Hij maakt lange (zeer lange) podcasts, die u telkens proberen in de situatie te plaatsen. Met een korrel zout te nemen soms, maar veel vaker enorm interessant, en paradigmaveranderend, zoals dat heet: na een podcast van Carlin over een onderwerp, kunt ge meestal niet anders dan dat onderwerp op een andere manier bekijken dan ervoor.
    • In Our Time: van de BBC, met de fantastische Melvyn Bragg, elke week drie kwartier, met telkens wereldexperten, over een ander onderwerp. Algemeen of specifiek, wetenschap, kunst, filosofie, alles komt aan bod — een greep uit de laatste paar afleveringen: dinosaurussen met pluimen, Picasso’s Guernica, de Picten, Germaine de Stael, chromatografie, Hamlet. Meer dan aangeraden.
    • Revolutions: Mike Duncan is de man die op zijn eentje een geschiedenispodcastrevolutie in gang heeft gezet, jaren geleden met zijn History of Rome (de serie is afgelopen maar nog altijd enorm hard aangeraden). Revolutions gaat over, ahem ja, revoluties. Hij bespreekt in zeer groot detail een aantal revoluties: die van Cromwell, de Amerikaanse, Haïti, de Franse, Gran Colombia, de Julirevolutie in Frankrijk, en nu is hij aan zijn zevende revolutie bezig: 1848. Fantastisch goed.
    • The History of Byzantium: Robin Pierson neemt over waar History of Rome stopte, met de geschiedenis van Romania, het Oost-Romeinse Rijk. Het wordt afgezaagd, maar ook hier: enorm fascinerend, zeer veel detail, zeer aangeraden.
    • The History of England: David Crowther, slaagt er meer dan om het even wie op deze lijst, in om het grappig te maken. Alleen daarom al aangeraden.

    Ik vind trouwens tijd voor podcasts tijdens het fietsen. En als ik aan het koken ben en er is niemand in de buurt.

    En ik luister met Podcast Addict, waar ik zeer content van ben. Het is niet gratis, maar het kost ook geen arm en een been.

  • Elektronische post aan de RUG

    Het eerste dat ik deed, toen ik naar de universiteit ging, was op zoek gaan naar de computers.

    Ik wilde op het netwerk geraken, namelijk. Welk netwerk, dat was nog niet zo heel duidelijk, want er waren toen allemaal verschillende netwerken, en er werd nog niet echt gesproken van “het internet”.

    Ik dus naar het Algemeen Rekencentrum (ARC) van de universiteit, en daar kreeg ik deze brochure in de hand geduwd:

    Hoera! Er is netwerk!

    …en een half uur later: helaas! Er is eigenlijk alleen maar de mogelijkheid om mails te versturen:

    elektronische post

    Elektronische post is reeds 2 jaar in gebruik aan de RUG. Zeer populair is het boodschappenverkeer met andere onderzoekscentra en universiteiten via EARN (European Academic and Research Network). Elektronisch boodschappenverkeer tussen de verschillende universitaire diensten binnen de RUG is eerder nog beperkt. Met de nieuwe kommunikatie-faciliteiten die RUGnet in de nabije toekomst zal bieden, zal een meer systematisch gebruik van interne elektronische post mogelijk worden.

    Het blijkt een zeer efficiënt systeem te zijn voor communicatie binnen en buiten de RUG.

    • Elektronische post is vlugger, eenvoudiger, goedkoper dan brievenpost en veel efficiënter dan telefoon.
    • Ook als de bestemmeling niet aanwezig is kunt U een boodschap in zijn electronische postbus achterlaten.
    • U hebt ook de mogelijkheid te checken of de bestemmeling Uw boodschap heeft ontvangen.
    • Een tekstuele mededeling is dikwijls duidelijker dan een mondelinge mededeling via telefoon (minder misverstanden en mogelijkheid tot kopij op papier). Met behulp van zgn. mailing-lijsten kan met één bewerking eenzelfde bericht aan meerdere bestemmelingen worden verstuurd.
    • Men kan zich ook inschrijven op één of meerdere info-lijsten om aldus automatisch berichten te ontvangen over een bepaald Onderwerp.

    Om berichten te kunnen versturen en ontvangen via elektronische post volstaat het zelf een mail-adres en een elektronische postbus te hebben (bvb op de CDR-mainframe of het computersysteem van de eigen dienst) en het mail-adres van zijn bestemmeling te kennen.

    Ik heb mij dan maar teleurgesteld ingeschreven een dozijn mailinglijsten — er deed een printout de ronde van honderden en honderden lijsten. En het heeft geduurd tot het jaar erna, toen de eerste webbrowser er kwam. :/

  • Amazon zijn de beste!

    Die keer dat ik AWS-kosten ontdekte waar ik niet van wist dat ik ze aan het maken was? Dat bleek te gaan om een forfaitaire supportkost, die ze er bijgelapt hadden. Geen idee of ik ergens een checkbox vergeten uitvinken was (ik ben daar nochtans zeer secuur in), dan wel of het iets is waar niemand onderuit kan, punt is dat ze maanden aan een stuk tientallen euro’s per maand hadden gefactureerd en betaald gekregen, en dat ik niet meer dan misschien een uur hun dienst had gebruikt.

    Ik heb een beleefd mailtje gestuurd naar Amazon, en schets mijn verbazing: een paar dagen later sturen ze mij de uitleg terug waarom, en zeggen ze er meteen bij dat ze de kosten allemaal terug zullen betalen.

    Goodwill en alles.

    Geslaagde operatie, dus.

  • I Need a Budget

    Ik denk dat ik dit jaar Sandra het beste nieuwjaarscadeau sinds vele jaren heb gegeven:

    Yup, we zijn ook op de YNAB-bandwagen gesprongen.

    Ik had het lang (láng) geleden al eens geïnstalleerd, toen het nog een echte toepassing was die kon gedownload worden, en er noch kop noch staart aan gevonden. En dan was ik nog eens een trial begonnen, toen Kelly er gelijk heel de tijd over begon te schrijven, maar met veel tegenzin wegens toch zeer ingrijpend en lastig. 

    Maar toen was er nieuw werk en moest er tegelijkertijd een nieuwe auto gevonden worden waardoor het financieel allemaal minder evident werd, en komt er ook nog universiteit van Zelie aan, en worden de kinderen er in het algemeen alleen maar ouder op en de kosten dus groter. 

    En zeer concreet was het toen plots begin december, was ik met maten op weekend geweest, en toen was het ergens net voorbij de helft van december en was al het geld op. Gelijk echt helemaal op.

    En dus is ook daar de kogel door de kerk geschoten. En is het een You Need A Budget-abonnement geworden. 

    Eigenlijk zou het een YNAB-cursus plus abonnement worden, maar tegen dat ik het definitief besloten had, was de cursus bij Kelly al afgesloten. En ik ben er eigenlijk wel van overtuigd dat het zonder ook kan. Een programma dat gemaakt is voor eindgebruikers, daar ga ik geen cursus voor volgen, ha!

    En ik ben het nog maar vijf dagen bezig, maar ik zie het al werken. Dus het komt wel in orde, denk ik. 

    De rekeningen

    De opstart is het vervelendste: de rekeningstand van alle mogelijke plaatsen waar er geld zit in de toepassing steken. In ons geval is dat:

    • cash van mij en van Sandra
    • zichtrekening van mij en van Sandra
    • spaarrekening van mij en van Sandra 
    • spaarrekening van Louis, Jan en Anna
    • mijn kredietkaart

    In het begin was ik de cash vergeten, en ik vraag me af of ik nu eigenlijk ook de maaltijdchequeskaart er ook zou moeten in steken — maar dat zie ik dan wel later. 

    Het begin van het begin is eenvoudig: gewoon de rekeningstand (positief of negatief) noteren voor de rekeningen, en tellen hoeveel cash ge op zak hebt. 

    Iets later bleek dat de kredietkaart vervelend deed: de beginstand op 1 januari gaf aan hoeveel ik uitgegeven had sinds 24 december of zo, en op 4 januari kreeg ik de –slik– afrekening van 24 november tot 23 december op mijn dak, waardoor alles in de soep liep. Ik vond online niet op 1-2-3 veel relevante hulp, dus heb ik maar alle uitgaven van de vorige afrekening ingegeven, waardoor de overschrijving van de afrekening overeenkwam met echt gemaakt uitgaven. 

    Het ziet er nog allemaal een beetje wonky uit, met die betaalperiodes die niet samenvallen met maanden, maar we zien wel wat het geeft.

    Belangrijke stap bij het opzetten van de rekeningen: ingeven wat de inkomsten zijn. Wij hebben er ons maandelijk loon en kindergeld in gestoken, en ook al een aantal voorziene 'interne transfers', die van rekeningen die we controleren naar rekeningen gaan die we controleren: een maandelijks bedrag dat we naar onze spaarrekening sturen en naar die van de Louis, Jan en Anna.

    (We doen dat ook met Zelie, en we geven ook nog maandelijks zakgeld aan de vier kinders, maar dat ingeven moest wachten tot we daar budgetcategorieën voor hadden, want eens dat geld overgeschreven is, is het uit onze handen en kunnen we er niets meer meer doen.)

    Budget

    Er zitten een aantal voorgedefinieerde budgetcategorieën in bij het opstarten, maar dat is helemaal naar goesting aan te passen. Wij hebben er op dit moment vijf hoofdcategorieën met een hoop subcategorieën van gemaakt:

    • Vaste kosten (lening voor het huis, voor de verbouwingen, voor de auto, verzekeringen en ziekenfonds, electriciteit, water, internet en telefoon, abonnementen en hosting en al, school, zakgeld van de kinders, dat soort zaken)
    • Variabele kosten (boodschappen, benzine, kledij, boeken, etc.)
    • Onderhoud (huis, medische kosten, auto, keuken, computers en dingen, dienstencheques, …)
    • Amuseleute (muziek en video, film, gaan eten, gaming, …)
    • Lange termijn (een geplande grote vakantie in de loop van het jaar, opleidingen, …)

    Regel 1: Give Every Dollar a Job

    YNAB heeft vier regels, dus zo ingewikkeld is het niet.

    Als de lonen ingevoerd zijn, dan staat er bovenaan het scherm in een groot groen vak een bedrag To be budgeted. Het is de bedoeling dat daar 0 euro staat: elke cent die binnenkomt, moet in het begin van de maand een doel hebben.

    Dat wil dus zeggen dat we een slag slaan in budgetbedragen voor elke individuele categorie. Ik ga ervan uit dat het iets is dat zich zal verfijnen in de volgende maanden, maar een paar voorbeelden (wij zijn met zes, pro memorie):

    • we zouden één keer per maand naar een film willen gaan kijken: 100 € gebudgetteerd
    • we willen één keer per maand degelijk gaan eten: 250 € gebudgetteerd

    Geen idee of we dat allemaal aanhouden, maar 't geeft toch een indicatie. Als ik eens geen zin heb om te koken voor de kinders en ze hebben goesting om pizza te bestellen, dan weet ik dat ik niet meer voor 250 € zal kunnen gaan eten, want dat gaat van de 'gaan eten'-categorie af. 

    Het budgetteren van de vaste kosten was dan wel weer eenvoudiger: gewoon in het netbanking-dinges alle rekeningen afgaan, en herleiden naar een kost per maand. Klaar!

    Regel 2: Save for a Rainy Day

    De budgetten zijn op maandbasis, maar het geld dat er naartoe gaat, wordt niet allemaal noodzakelijk uitgegeven: langetermijndoelen vertaalt ge naar een maandelijkse kost, en daar komt elke maand geld in terecht. 

    Als we een auto kopen en we volgen één bepaalde leningformule, moeten we binnen vier jaar 8000 € leggen. We hebben natuurlijk geen 8000 €, maar op 48 maand uitgezet is dat 170 € per maand. En dus zetten we in de categorie 'Lange Termijn' een subcategorie 'Overname auto', en budgetteren we daar elke maand 170 € in.

    Dat wil zeggen dat als er op het einde van de maand nog 200 euro over is op de rekening, dat er eigenlijk maar 30 euro over is, want die 170 staat opzij.

    Ik heb al een subcategorie 'Computer en materiaal' aangemaakt voor de aanschaf van nieuwe computers als degene die we nu hebben onvermijdelijk zullen kapot gaan en een categorie 'Vakantie' om eens op grote vakantie te gaan binnen twee jaar, maar als we toch op termijn van jaren denken voor de auto en de computers en vakantie, kunnen we net zo goed op termijn van jaren denken voor fietsen, wasmachine, droogkast, verbouwingen, …

    Regel 3: Roll with the Punches

    …ah, maar wat gebeurt er als het plots onverwacht minder gaat? Dat is normaal, en dat is geen drama. Deze maand was het op 2 januari al van dat in de subcategorie 'Medische kosten': 720 euro van de orthodontist. Slik.

    Ik had niet zoveel gebudgetteerd. En ik ben nog maar net begonnen, dus ik heb natuurlijk nog geen potje opgespaard. En dus heb ik het geld (tijdelijk) weggehaald van een andere categorie.

    Dat maakt het zeer zeer duidelijk: geld kan maar op één manier uitgegeven worden (zie regel 1). Geld uitgegeven aan de dokter kan niet meer uitgegeven worden aan iets anders. En ja, dat lijkt belachelijk, maar dat is bij mij alvast een enorme revolute: mijn regel was altijd "ik geef geld uit zolang er geld op de rekening staat, en als er geen meer is, dan stop ik wel met uitgeven". Wat het natuurlijk redelijk pijnlijk maakte als er rekeningen toekwamen, of onverwachte kosten. 

    Dat zou bij dezen niet meer het geval moeten zijn. Als er onvoorziene kosten zijn, okay, tot daar aan toe. Dan wordt het iets minder bij een andere categorie.

    Regel 4: Live on Last Month's Income

    …en het logische gevolg van regel 1, 2 en 3 is het uiteindelijke doel van YNAB: in plaats van geld uit te geven tot het op is, of godbetert te leven op krediet, is het de bedoeling om geld zo lang mogelijk te laten staan. 

    Regel vier zegt dat het de bedoeling is om op termijn te leven op de inkomsten van de vorige maand, maar eigenlijk zou dat moeten zijn: laats geld zo lang mogelijk ongebruikt staan. 

    In het ideale geval wil dat dan zeggen dat ge op termijn een hele maand of zelfs meer zonder inkomsten zoudt kunnen leven, omdat er genoeg buffer opgebouwd staat.

    Ik heb nog geen maand afgewerkt, dus ik zie wel hoe het in de de praktijk werkt, maar zoals ze het zeggen bij YNAB:

    If you’re done budgeting for the month and you have extra funds, budget some to the next month until that ‘To be Budgeted’ is at zero. The next time you sit down to budget, repeat the process.Send those dollars to the next month, whatever you can. In short order you’ll realize that you just funded all of February and it’s the middle of January. You’ll sit there befuddled. “Did I do something wrong? Am I missing something?” (You may have missed Valentine’s Day. Go back and adjust.)

    En nu?

    Ik moet voor de voorzienbare toekomst elke uitgave die ik doe ingeven in YNAB. Dat klinkt erger dan het is — er is een degelijke app voor telefoon die het gemakkelijk maakt om dat overal en altijd te doen — maar het is wel werk, natuurlijk. 

    Ik ben de persoon die vorige maand loononderhandelingen moest doen toen hij van werk veranderde, en die op dat moment voor de eerste keer in bijna acht jaar ritueel zijn loonbrief opengedaan heeft. Die al jaren pertinent weigert zijn kredietkaartafrekeningen open te doen of onder ogen te komen. Die al jaren volhoudt dat elke uitgave onder 100 euro "niet echt telt", of toch in het begin van de maand, als er nog geld van de rekening kan gehaald worden. Die al jaren leeft met de vuistregel "geld uitgeven tot de bank zegt dat het niet meer kan, en dan wachten tot het loon gestort is en dan kunnen we weer verder". 

    Maar ik heb er een goed gevoel over. We zijn vier en een halve dag verder, en ik heb nog nooit van mijn leven zo goed geweten hoeveel geld er binnenkomt en buiten gaat. En in tegenstelling tot wat ik al heel mijn leven denk, voel ik mij daar veel rustiger bij. Ik heb grip op mijn leven, lijkt het wel. 

    Euh ja, sorry als het een beetje sekte-achtig klinkt.

  • Prospect theory en een auto kopen

    We moeten een nieuwe auto kopen. Er moeten zeven plaatsen in, hij mag niet te veel geld kosten, we zitten dus in het segment Citroën Berlingo / Peugeot Partner / Volkswagen Caddy.

    Er zijn allemaal verschillende formules voor zo’n autolening: op twee jaar, drie jaar, vijf jaar, en (vergeef mij als dat belachelijk evident is, ik ben een leek wat geld betreft) verdorie ook een mogelijkheid om minder te betalen per maand, maar dan op het einde van de termijn een groot bedrag ineens af te betalen.

    Dan hebt ge bijvoorbeeld om een bedrag van 20.027,75 euro te lenen deze twee mogelijkheden naast elkaar:

    Mijn eerste instinct is natuurlijk optie 1 te nemen: we betalen iets meer per maand, akkoord, maar na afloop is de auto van ons. Bij optie 2 betalen we misschien wel wat minder per maand, maar als we op het einde van onze vier jaar betalen zitten, moeten we nog meer dan achtduizend lappen leggen om die auto te mogen houden!

    Dus eigenlijk betalen we, in mijn hoofd, och here tachtig euro per maand minder om iets meer dan de helft van het bedrag op een jaar minder af te betalen, maar moeten we op het einde van de rit nog ongeveer de helft zelf betalen.

    In de praktijk zit het een beetje anders in mekaar, zo is mij uitgelegd: als ik me niet vergis is die 8017,96 euro het bedrag dat de garage ons op het einde van de 4 jaar nog geeft voor de auto (op voorwaarde dat hij niet kapot gereden is). En dat bedrag kunnen we dan ofwel helemaal betalen en dan is de auto van ons, ofwel weer een lening voor aangaan, ofwel (denk ik) inzetten om een nieuwe auto te kopen, of anders doen we niets en gaat de auto terug naar de garage.

    En dat laatste is wat er in de praktijk wellicht zou kunnen gebeuren: binnen vier jaar zijn al die kinderen nog eens vier jaar ouden, en dan zou het wel eens gemakkelijker kunnen zijn voor ons om voor de paar keer dat we een auto nodig hebben (zeer grote boodschappen, vakantie, familiebezoek) een auto te huren, of iets Cambio-achtigs te doen.

    Maar het geheel deed mij hard denken aan vooruitzichttheorie, en hoe het zit met risico-aversie. Bij goeie ouwe NN/g staat het proper in een diagram gegoten:

    In scenario 1 heeft iemand 1000 dollar, en krijgt hij de keuze tussen (a) 50% kans dat hij 1000 bij krijgt of niets bij krijgt, en (b) zeker 500 dollar bij.

    In scenario 2 heeft iemand 2000 dollar, en krijgt hij de keuze tussen (a) 50% kans dat hij niets bij krijgt of 1000 dollar verliest, en (b) zeker 500 dollar verliezen.

    Bij de twee scenario’s leiden A en B eigenlijk naar precies dezelfde uitkomst, maar gewoon door de manier waarop het voorgesteld wordt, maken de mensen andere keuzes. Zotjes — lees meer alhier.
