Evolution of the dune ecosystem in Flanders during the Middle Ages : anthropogenic factors versus sea level change theory The purpose of the present article is to demonstrate that the disruption process of the
original coastal ecosystem of the so-called Older dunes on the Flemish coast only started
during the Great Reclamation Period as a result of anthropogenic factors, until, with the
exception of a small stretch on the West Coast, it was completely destroyed in the 14th and
the beginning of the 15th century.

Get a clue, iTunes.

Mountain Lion Review: What Happened to Apple’s Innovation? That's the most surprising thing about Mountain Lion. Not what Apple did, but that it makes clear a startling reality: Microsoft is the new Apple, thinking of ways to make a better, more productive experience for users. Sure, MS might fail, but at least Redmond is breaking new ground and trying to push computing forward.
Think about that for a second: Mountain Lion is conservative and boring—even gaudy at times. Meanwhile Microsoft is pushing the envelope and being innovative and elegant in its approach to user interface.
850k Android Daily Activations, 300m Total Devices, Says Andy Rubin | TechCrunch In many ways the mobile platform war feels like the desktop race of the early ’90s. Apple had a huge lead, refused to license and is now about to be overtaken by hordes of nondescript clones. But in this race the main competitor is Google rather than Microsoft and the devices are smartphones instead of beige desktops. It’s just a matter of time until Android overtakes iOS now.

The Odd Couple: Romney Vs. Gingrich | Politics News | Rolling Stone If Romney is a scripted automaton who could make it through a year's worth of marital coitus without one spontaneous utterance, Gingrich is his exact opposite – taken prisoner in war, Newt would be blabbing state secrets without torture within minutes, and minutes after that would be calling his guards idiots who lack his nuanced grasp of European history, and minutes after that would be lying to two of his captors about an affair he had with the third.
Apple’s File System APIs | Rixstep’s The Technological Try any of that on a Windows box and Cutler tells you where to get off. But in the world of Apple there is no sanity checking whatsoever: any line of rogue code in any program written by any programmer in the world can contain a bug that hoses the entire system. Testimony of Ms. Soon Ok Lee The punishment cell is one of the most dreaded punishments for all prisoners. The cells are usually 60 cm wide and 110 cm high. Therefore, the prisoners have no room to stand up, stretch their legs or lie down. They cannot even lean against the walls because they are too jagged. There are twenty such cells for female prisoners and 58 cells for male prisoners. They are usually detained for seven to ten days as punishment for certain offenses, such as leaving an oily mark on clothes, failing to memorize the president's New Year message or repeated failure to meet work quotas.
Kurt Andersen: From Fashion to Housewares, Are We in a Decades-Long Design Rut? | Style | Vanity Fair Paging professor Helmut Gaus… Paging professor Helmut Gaus… "Since 1992, as the technological miracles and wonders have propagated and the political economy has transformed, the world has become radically and profoundly new. (And then there’s the miraculous drop in violent crime in the United States, by half.) Here is what’s odd: during these same 20 years, the appearance of the world (computers, TVs, telephones, and music players aside) has changed hardly at all, less than it did during any 20-year period for at least a century. The past is a foreign country, but the recent past—the 00s, the 90s, even a lot of the 80s—looks almost identical to the present. This is the First Great Paradox of Contemporary Cultural History."
"Ironically, new technology has reinforced the nostalgic cultural gaze: now that we have instant universal access to every old image and recorded sound, the future has arrived and it’s all about dreaming of the past. Our culture’s primary M.O. now consists of promiscuously and sometimes compulsively reviving and rejiggering old forms. It’s the rare “new” cultural artifact that doesn’t seem a lot like a cover version of something we’ve seen or heard before. Which means the very idea of datedness has lost the power it possessed during most of our lifetimes."

The Real Story Behind Apple’s ‘Think Different’ Campaign – Forbes In writing this story, I’ve drawn from handwritten, dated creative journals I’ve diligently chronicled throughout my agency career as well as files I saved from the 1997 Apple time period (being a packrat often proves useful). In these journals are countless pages of notes and concepts I jotted down during the process of trying to bring Apple back to prominence. I also found the original “To the crazy ones” television script I presented to Jobs, as well as a plethora of rough drafts.
While I’ve seen a few inaccurate articles and comments floating around the Internet about how the legendary “Think Different” campaign was conceived, what prompted me to share this inside account was Walter Isaacson’s recent, best-selling biography on Steve Jobs. In his book, Isaacson incorrectly suggests Jobs created and wrote much of the “To the crazy ones” launch commercial. To me, this is a case of revisionist history.

A cherry picking tale, and an update on spinal manipulation science « Alternative Medicine « Health « Skeptic North Spinal manipulative therapy (SMT) has long enjoyed a solid reputation for the treatment of so-called “mechanical” low back pain, and is widely used by physical therapists as well as chiropractors. Even skeptics tend to give it a pass, regarding it as the one thing chiropractors offer that we don’t really have a complaint with, much the way we used to think maybe acupuncture had something going for it, until better evidence crushed our optimism. For instance, just recently Dr. David Gorski — as tough-minded a quackery critic as they come — casually mentioned that “no one argues that … manipulative therapies can’t help back pain.” Actually, skeptics who’ve been following the SMT science are now arguing exactly that.
They are quickly heading to the top of the charts of sheer stupidity. And what they don't realise is that, unlike the movie industry and—though to a somewhat lesser extent— the music industry, they have even less of a legitimate ‘raison d'être’ than their counterparts in those industries.

Everything You Think You Know About the Collapse of the Soviet Union Is Wrong – By Leon Aron | Foreign Policy Every revolution is a surprise. Still, the latest Russian Revolution must be counted among the greatest of surprises. In the years leading up to 1991, virtually no Western expert, scholar, official, or politician foresaw the impending collapse of the Soviet Union, and with it one-party dictatorship, the state-owned economy, and the Kremlin's control over its domestic and Eastern European empires. Neither, with one exception, did Soviet dissidents nor, judging by their memoirs, future revolutionaries themselves. When Mikhail Gorbachev became general secretary of the Communist Party in March 1985, none of his contemporaries anticipated a revolutionary crisis. Although there were disagreements over the size and depth of the Soviet system's problems, no one thought them to be life-threatening, at least not anytime soon.
