We waren aan het spreken over de dingen in de wereld, over hoe erg het allemaal is en alles.
Mijn gedacht erover blijft dat over de hele wereld iedereen min of meer hetzelfde wilt, en zich op min of meer dezelfde manier gedraagt gegeven ongeveer dezelfde omgevingsfactoren.
We zijn allemaal equal opportunity klootzakken, wat dat betreft. Om maar één sprekend voorbeeld te nemen: Boeddhisten vredelievend? Ik weet van mensen die daar anders over denken.
En nee, natuurlijk niet alle Boeddhisten.
Dat is het juist: van zodra iemand begint te spreken over de Marokkanen, de Vlaming, de vluchtelingen, is het om zeep. Want natuurlijk #notallmuslims, #notallroma, #notalljews, #notallmen, #notallvulzelfmaarin.
(Ja sorry, die #notallmen is “heel problematisch”, ik weet het.)
En naast dat het allemaal om zeep is, is het allemaal zeer hard niét om zeep, in het grotere beeld — zie wat Hans Rosling en andere Nieuwe Optimisten zeggen:
Maar behalve dat het allemaal nu veel beter is dan ooit, en alleen maar beter wordt, is het tóch allemaal om zeep.
Zero-sum politics maakt alles kapot: de gedachte dat als er in politiek (en diplomatie, en het leven in het algemeen) een winnaar is, dat de andere partij automatisch de verliezer is en omgekeerd. En natuurlijk loopt dat helemaal in de soep als er meer dan een paar partijen zijn, zoals, oh, ik zeg maar iets, in het Midden-Oosten. Of als de zaken niet zomaar zwart-wit zijn, zoals, oh, ik zeg maar iets, overal en altijd.
En nationalisme maakt ook alles kapot. En godsdienst. En mensen in het algemeen, want mensen zijn equal opportunity klootzakken.
Maar het gaat tegelijkertijd ook alsmaar beter, echt waar.
En ook helemaal niet.
Maar toch wel. En ook toch niet.
Is er een term voor doublespeak maar dan in uw hoofd en omgekeerd?

Er kwam een steekvlam en daarna een rookpluim uit de voeding van mijn computer. Dat is meestal een slecht teken.
Ik heb hem binnengestoken in de computerreparatiewinkel, en zie nu: drie werkdagen later is hij helemaal gerepareerd. Een nieuwe voeding en wat klein onderhoud, en ik ben maar iets meer dan honderd euro kwijt.
Ik had gerekend op veel meer in het budget, wat wil zeggen dat ik geld over had om deze maand te verschuiven naar de orthodontist van de kinders in plaats van dat volgende maand te moeten doen.
Ah ja, want die orthodontist was helaas zo maar even 1000 euro te laag ingeschat.

Er is iemand langsgeweest om te kijken naar ons dak, bijvoorbeeld. Het dak dat eigenlijk half vervangen zou moeten worden en waar met den enen isolatie bij zou moeten. De offerte was bijna precies de helft van de vorige offerte die we kregen, maar het is nog zeer veel geld.
Of dat we eigenlijk nog onze voorgevel zouden moet herdoen, vóór er nog meer stukken afbrokkelen.
En dat we nog altijd een nieuwe voordeur moeten hebben.
En dat de microgolfover moet vervangen worden.
En dingen. En alles.

Ik herinner mij dat nog, het jaar 1984.
Alle kranten en tijdschriften stonden er vol van, over hoe 1984 al dan niet 1984 was zoals in het boek 1984.
Ik weet niet meer wat de conclusie was, maar in mijn hoofd waren de jaren 1980 zeker niet 1984. Eerder Brave New World, ja.
Neil Postman schreef er Amusing Ourselves to Death over: dat mensen niet onderdrukt zouden worden door een Staat, maar wel onder de duim zouden gehouden worden door een verslaving aan amusement.
Orwell dacht dat boeken zouden verbannen worden; Huxley dacht dat er geen reden zou zijn om boeken te verbannen omdat er toch niemand boeken zou willen lezen. Orwell dacht dat mensen dom zouden gehouden worden door informatie achter te houden, en dat de waarheid zou achtergehouden worden; Huxley dacht dat we zouden verdrinken in zoveel informatie dat we totaal passieve consumenten zouden worden, en dat de waarheid ergens zou verdrinken in een zee van irrelevante nonsens.
Het zag er een hele tijd naar uit dat we inderdaad in dat Amusing Ourselves to Death-scenario zaten, met een explosie aan Reality TV en nog wat later de Interwebs en al wat daar op te vinden was van mindless entertainment.

Tegenwoordig vrees ik dat we niet moeten kiezen tussen Orwell en Huxley: we doen ze gewoon alletwee.
Ik kwam deze tegen daarnet, uit 1984:

Ik was verre van de eerste die de link met Trump legde:
…maar het gaat veel verder dan dat: bij ons in België doen ze hetzelfde. Er is geen objectieve realiteit meer. OK, we kunnen eens lachen en een semantische of filosofische discussie houden over de woorden “objectief” en “realiteit”, ja, ‘k weet het.
Wat ik bedoel: vroeger kon een mens zeggen “het Nationaal Instituut van de Statistiek, of [voeg uw eigen gezaghebbende persoon of instantie naar keuze in] zegt dat er x% werklozen of migranten of armen of watdanook zijn”, en dan kunnen we nog wat discussiëren over definities, maar uiteindelijk vertrekken we voor de rest van de discussie wel van dat feit.
Nu is een eerste reactie iets in de zin van “hah, jaja, dat zal wel zijn — dat zit daar vol met sossen / tjeven / walen / politiekers / ambtenaren, wie gelooft die mensen nog?”
En dan is elke discussie over. Logisch nadenken, kritisch kijken naar bronnen, eigen conclusies trekken: ik lees wel hier en daar dat het in de schoolprogramma’s zou staan, maar van wat ik zie van de leerboeken? On n’est pas sorti de l’auberge.
Alles is om zeep namelijk, vrees ik.

Ik had gezworen dat ik nooit nog een voet zou zetten in de editeerdoos van die mestvaalt die Wikipedia heet.
En toen kreeg ik een mail dat een artikel dat ik ooit aangemaakt had, genomineerd was voor verwijdering. Een artikel over een Belgische muzikant, die het mijns insziens waard is om op Wikipedia te staan.
JA IK WEET DAT DAT ER NIET TOE DOET, WAT IK DENK.
Belangrijker dan dat: er worden al jaren artikels in kranten en tijdschriften over hem geschreven, hij schreef onder meer filmmuziek voor Peter Greenaway en maakte een opera met Chris Ware (ja, juist opgemerkt dat ik niet naar Wikipedia link maar naar Wikiwand — ik gun ze zelfs de view op de pagina niet), enfin, qua Notability zit het snor, en qua onafhankelijke niet-primaire en niet-zelfgepubliceerde bronnen ook.
Dus, ik zeg dat op de discussie voor verwijdering. Dat ik in de snelte op GoPress gaan kijken was en dat ik daar meer dan 400 artikels vond, onder meer 66 in De Morgen, 57 in De Standaard, 56 in Het Nieuwsblad, 38 in De Tijd, 37 in La libre Belgique, 32 in Le Soir, enz. Dat er op muziekcentrum.kunsten.be een officiële biografie met Staatsimprimatur staat en links naar boeken en artikels en allerlei.
En ik voeg een aantal bronnen toe aan het artikel. Omdat ik ook wel weet dat die klootzakken van deletionisten zelf natuurlijk nooit ook maar een halve poot zouden oplichten om een artikel van de verwijdering te redden.
Aha, nee hoor, niet goed genoeg:

Bruzz heeft ook een about-pagina, en toe maar, laat ons alles dat meer dan 11 jaar geleden is ook maar als niet-relevant markeren. Trouwens: het ene lemma op kunsten.be alleen al geeft u genoeg onafhankelijke bronnen voor vijf artikels.
